SCHOOL COUNCIL PAGE

How the School Council is formed.

At the start of every year, each class in the school holds a secret ballot to elect two representatives to form the School Council. The interested children put themselves forward and give a short presentation to win over their electorate. There is then a vote and the top two are elected. The class reps. meet at regular intervals, where they put forward the views of their class members. These views are then reported to the staff and then via the school management team, to the Governors of the school. In this way the children of the school are able to contribute to the overall running of the school.

Meetings.

Meetings can be called by the Co-ordinator of the School Council, or by any member of the group and can be held up to eight times per term. During the meetings minutes are taken with actions required noted. The reps. then report back to their individual classes.

This year the class reps. have already made a number of decisions. These include which Charities the children would like to support and how they would like to raise funds. So far this year the school have supported Jeans for Genes where  £147 was raised and Children in Need where £144.45 was collected. This typifies the generosity and the caring nature of the children in the school. yellow

The Council have also carried out a survey as to what new playground equipment the children would like. The school “Maths Team” have now become involved and are reducing their “wish list” in order to keep costs within a set budget!

A further illustration of how the School Council is able to have an effect on the running of the school happened during a recent meeting, when some of the older children asked for the school trips policy to be reviewed. They expressed their concern that the current policy did not give certain children enough “settling in” time at the beginning of the autumn term. This view was then put to staff at the following staff meeting when approximately an hour was spent discussing the matter, resulting in certain recommendations being prepared for the school Governors. Watch this space for the expected Policy amendment.

During our recent open day, (part of our 50 years celebrations) members of the Council were included in the team of expert guides who escorted visitors around the school.

Several letters from ex-pupils have since been received, in appreciation of their efforts.

Hopefully these pages will have provided you with a little insight as to the work of the School Council at Chaddesden Park Junior School. The children take great pride in being elected by their peers and take their responsibilities very seriously. They certainly make a very good job of it.
